Shadowcaster

Shadowcasters are trained in arcane magic as well as in roguish abilities. They are tricksters who use magic to make their moves even more unpredictable and unstoppable.

Level 3: Spellcasting

Cast wizard spells and cantrips from the wizard spell list. Intelligence is your Spellcasting Ability. The same spellcasting rules of an Arcane Trickster apply, listed at the bottom of this page for ease of access.

Level 3: Shadow Casting

You can use your Sneak Attack when using spells which require an attack roll.

Level 3: Shadow Dodge

As a bonus action, teleport to a cell you can see within 30 feet. Recharges after a short rest.

Level 9: Shadow Retribution

If you are targeted by a damaging spell, whether it damages you or not, you can cast a cantrip in reaction on the caster.

Spellcasting Rules

You have learned to cast spells. See the Player's Handbook for the rules on spellcasting. The information below details how you use those rules as a Shadowcaster.

Cantrips. You know three cantrips of your choice from the Wizard spell list. Poison SprayTrue Strike, and Minor Illusion are recommended.

Whenever you gain a Rogue level, you can replace one of your cantrips with another eligible Wizard cantrip of your choice.

When you reach Rogue level 10, you learn another eligible Wizard cantrip of your choice.

Spell Slots. The Shadowcaster Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your level 1+ spells. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a Long Rest.

Prepared Spells of 1st+ Level. You prepare a list of the level 1+ spells that are available for you to cast with this feature. To start, choose three level 1 Wizard spells.

The number of spells on your list increases as you gain Rogue levels, as shown in the Prepared Spells column of the Shadowcaster Spellcasting table. Whenever that number increases, choose additional Wizard spells until the number of spells on your list matches the number in the Shadowcaster Spellcasting table. The chosen spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For example, if you're a level 7 Rogue, your list of prepared spells can include five Wizard spells of level 1 or 2 in any combination.

Changing Your Prepared Spells. Whenever you gain a Rogue level, you can replace one spell on your list with another Wizard spell for which you have spell slots.

Spellcasting Ability. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for your Wizard Spells.

Spellcasting Focus. You can use an Arcane Focus as a Spellcasting Focus for your Wizard Spells.

Level 3: True Strike Shadow Magic

When you cast True Strike, you may choose to have it based on shadow magic rather than radiant magic. If you do, the spell does necrotic damage instead of radiant damage, and it ignores any resistances to necrotic damage.
